We want to know what you think about our changes to the Codes of Professional Practice

| Social Care Wales

We’re updating our Codes of Professional Practice for social care workers and employers to make sure they’re as clear and easy to use as possible.

The codes are a set of standards that everyone who’s registered with us must follow, to help keep people safe.

The codes were last updated in 2017, but since then the number of people registered with us has grown from 11,000 people to over 60,000 people.

Last year we spoke to more than 300 people working in the social care sector and we asked them what they thought about the codes. They told us they wanted them to be simpler and shorter. We’ve made some changes based on this feedback and we’d like to know what you think about them.

If you’re a social care worker or employer, the revised codes don’t ask you to change your practice in any way. The proposed new wording aims to make it clearer what’s expected from you.

Sarah McCarty, our Chief Executive, said: “Every social care worker, manager and employer in Wales is expected to work in-line with our codes of professional practice, and we embed the codes in resources to support the sector such as qualifications and practice guidance so it’s important we hear from as many people as possible about our changes.

“We’re really keen to hear from people working in the social care sector and from anyone who receives care and support from our workforce. Every view matters so please tell us what you think.”

How you can get involved

There’s information on our website about our consultation and what we’ve changed in the codes.

You can send us your views in several ways, such as through our online form, by email or by sending us a video.

You can also respond as a group or organisation. We’ve created some engagement packs to help you run sessions and gather views.

As the consultation period nears its end, there will be two online sessions, on 27 November and 5 December, available for those who missed earlier opportunities to provide their feedback. You’ll be able to book to attend these through our website and booking will open in November.

The closing date for the consultation is midday, 17 December 2024.
