New Leaders and future managers course

We’re developing an exciting new course for early years and childcare practitioners in Wales who are considering leadership and management roles. The course is also open to existing managers who want to develop and strengthen their skills and confidence.

The 10-month course will be mainly online, with two face-to-face sessions. It will provide:

  • structured learning and teaching
  • guest speakers
  • learner support and assessment guidance
  • flexible learning opportunities
  • leadership and management resources.

The course will support practitioners to work towards the Level 4 Preparing for Leadership and Management in Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development and to fulfil Part A of the Learning and induction framework for early years and childcare managers, as required for certain job roles.

There will be two initial intakes in:

  • September 2026
  • January 2027.

What is the Leaders and future managers course?

The course is a new initiative to support aspiring and existing leaders within the early years and childcare sector. It provides structured learning, support, and assessment opportunities based on the content of the Level 4 Preparing for Leadership and Management in Children's Care, Play, Learning and Development qualification.

Who can apply?

The course is aimed at practitioners working in regulated childcare settings who:

  • hold a QCF level 5 Advanced Practice to undertake learning and also achieve the required Part A of the Induction for Managers
  • hold a Level 2 or Level 3 Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development qualification (or recognised equivalent)
  • want to progress to leadership and management roles
  • are preparing to take on management responsibilities
  • are existing managers and wish to develop their leadership knowledge and skills.

Course content and assessment

Learners can expect to cover topics such as:

  • preparing for leadership
  • values-based and compassionate leadership
  • developing effective teams
  • communication and difficult conversations
  • workforce well-being
  • leading change.

Activities as part of the sessions will include:

  • small group discussions
  • case study analysis
  • workplace-based application exercises.

Assessment methods will be flexible and includes either:

  • a reflective account
  • a presentation
  • a written assignment.

After completing the course

It’s anticipated that learners who wish to progress to the full Level 4 Preparing for Leadership and management in children’s care, play, learning and development will be able to use Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), subject to the requirements of the awarding organisation or learning provider.

Not all learners will want, or be ready, to undertake the full Level 4 qualification after completing the course, but completing Part A of the Learning and induction framework for early years and managers provides a strong foundation for future progression into leadership roles and qualification.
