Other requirements

At least 50 per cent of the non-supervisory staff must hold a qualification at least at level 2 from this framework, which is appropriate to the post. At least half of these (50 per cent) must have a qualification at level 3.

  5. Level 2 Diploma in Children’s Care, Learning and Development (Wales and Northern Ireland)

  6. CACHE Extended Diploma in Children’s Care, Learning and Development

  7. NVQ 2 Children’s Care, Learning and Development

  8. NVQ 2 Child Care and Education

  9. NVQ 2 Early Years Care and Education

  10. CACHE Certificate in Child Care and Education (CCE)

  11. First Diploma in Early Years / Nursery Nursing

The following qualifications are only accepted for those practitioners working with children aged 2 - 3.

  1. Pre-school Learning Alliance Certificate

  2. Pre-school Playgroups Association Certificate

  3. Wales Pre-school Playgroup Association Diploma in Playgroup Practice

  4. CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Early Years Care and Education (Welsh medium)

  5. CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Pre-school Practice

  6. EDEXCEL Level 2 BTEC First Diploma Children's Care, Learning and Development (only accepted if commenced prior to 2014)

  7. CACHE Level 2 Diploma in Childcare and Education (NQF) (only accepted if commenced prior to 2014)

Other UK qualifications accepted

Workers moving to Wales who hold a qualification recognised by the Department of Education (England), the Northern Ireland Social Care Council or Scottish Social Service Council should complete aspects of the All Wales Induction Framework for Early Years and Childcare that are relevant to their role and the setting.

However, employers should ensure that any other UK qualification meets the criteria set out in this Qualification Framework before accepting it for employment.

Induction requirements

Practitioners who are new to the early years and childcare sector or new to an organisation should complete the All Wales Induction Framework for Early Years and Childcare.

All staff should receive an induction that includes health and safety, and child protection policies and procedures, during their first week of employment.
