New Section 12 (S12) app launched to help speed up Mental Health Act assessments

| Social Care Wales

A new app is helping professionals arrange Mental Health Act assessments more quickly and easily.

The bilingual S12 app is now available in Wales and is being used by Approved Mental Health Professionals (AMHPs) and Section 12 approved doctors as part of a pilot scheme. Eight local authorities and three health boards are already using the app or preparing to use it.

In the S12 app, an AMHP can send a request for medical support and every doctor who’s signed up receives an instant alert showing:

  • where the assessment will take place
  • when it’s needed
  • any specialist skills needed, such as CAMHS experience or preferred language.

Without the app, AMHPs often have to phone around different doctors to find one who’s available. Now, doctors can reply through the app, making the process quicker and more co-ordinated.

The S12 app puts all requests in one place. Every signed‑up doctor can see new requests straight away. This should:

  • cut waiting times
  • reduce delays
  • improve the experience for people in crisis.

Although the app has been used successfully in England for several years, this is the first time it's been adapted for use in Wales. We’re supporting the 12-month pilot.

Jim Widdett, our Head of Mental Health and Learning Disabilities, said:

“We’re delighted the S12 app has been rolled out in Wales. We have a clear purpose to improve the quality and speed of support for people who need a Mental Health Act assessment and their families.”

Staff using the app can also share their experiences on a new blog on the AMHP online community of practice. The online community is for AMHPs to connect with each other and share their experiences. You can join the community here.
