Myfanwy Harman, who manages Cylch Meithrin y Gurnos in Merthyr Tydfil, has today been named the winner of the 2025 Caring in Welsh award at an event at the Wrexham National Eisteddfod.
The Caring in Welsh award recognises and celebrates paid workers providing excellent care and support through the medium of Welsh.
The worker doesn’t need to be a fluent Welsh speaker, as long as they use the language when they provide care and support – a little bit of Welsh goes a long way!
This year six individuals from across Wales were chosen as finalists for the award by an expert panel of judges. The winner was chosen by a public vote, which saw more than 4,900 people voting.
Myfanwy was nominated for the award by Megan Morris, who works with Myfanwy through her role at Clybiau Plant Cymru Kids’ Clubs.
Myfanwy was nominated for her work providing high-quality Welsh medium childcare to local children in Merthyr Tydfil.
Cylch Meithrin y Gurnos offers childcare for children up to 12 years ol, and gives local children the opportunity to use and hear the Welsh language outside school. Under Myfanwy’s care, Welsh is a part of each child’s daily experience.
Myfanwy was announced as the winner at a lunchtime event at the National Eisteddfod in Wrexham by Social Care Wales’s Chief Executive Sarah McCarty.
Sarah said: “Many congratulations to Myfanwy and all our highly commended finalists!“Being able to receive care and support from someone who can speak your language is an important part of receiving dignified, quality care.
“This year’s award has given us fantastic examples of inspiring and dedicated workers from across the sector who are providing excellent care through the medium of Welsh and shown the impact this makes to people’s lives.
“We’d encourage all care workers to use the Welsh they have at work or become Welsh learners. We have lots of resources to help you develop and improve your Welsh to support the provision of services in people’s language of choice.”
