Up to £27,000 of funding available to new social work students in Wales

| Social Care Wales

Social work students in Wales can benefit from funding of up to £27,000 to help them with the cost of study.

The Social Work Bursary Scheme (SWBS) is available to students following approved social work degree and master’s programmes at these Welsh universities:

  • Bangor University
  • Cardiff University
  • Cardiff Metropolitan University
  • Swansea University
  • The Open University in Wales
  • University of South Wales
  • Wrexham University.

There’s £3,750 available for each year of undergraduate study and £12,715 for each year of postgraduate study.

Each social work degree programme is allocated a set number of bursaries to allocate to students. Any student who’s ordinarily resident in Wales for 12 months and isn’t sponsored by an employer is eligible to receive a bursary.

As well as the social work bursary, students will receive funding towards the cost of their work placements through the Practice Learning Opportunity Allowance.

You can find full details about who’s eligible for the bursary and how to apply on our student funding pages.
