Current qualification accepted

Required by Welsh Government policy:

  1. City and Guilds Level 4 Preparing for Leadership and Management in Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development

Plus in line with WG guidance Flying Start leaders would be expected to complete or be working towards the competency qualification for their role:

  1. City and Guilds Level 5 Leadership and Management of Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development: Practice

Degrees:

The following degrees will also be accepted for a Flying Start Manager role, provided that Part B of the All Wales induction framework for early years managers is completed within the first 12 months of starting the new role:

  1. BA2 University of Wales Trinity Saint David: BA Early Years Education and Care: Early Years Practitioner Status (completed after July 2024)

  2. BA University of Wales Trinity Saint David: BA Early Years Education and Care: Early Years Practitioner Status (completed after July 2024)

  3. University of South Wales: BA Early Years Education and Practice (with Early Years Practitioner status) (completed after July 2025)

The degrees above are only recognised if individuals have graduated after the completed date stated.


Universities have updated their course modules and content to align with the Level 4 Preparing for Leadership and Management criteria, which is required for the Flying Start Manager role.


Graduates must then demonstrate their Level 5 Leadership and Management skills by completing the competency skills progress logs of the All Wales induction framework for early years and childcare managers within the first year of starting their managerial role, which is also required for the Flying Start Manager role.
