Attract

Advertising your roles to attract a diverse range of applicants who share your workplace values and vision.

Advertising your roles to attract a diverse range of applicants who share your workplace values and vision.

Communicating your culture and values – and why they matter – to the children and young people and your staff members means you can target more diverse, applicants who share your vision and values.

This may include:

  • older or retired people
  • people with no care work experience
  • people from abroad
  • neurodiverse people
  • other people who may not have previously considered working in care.

This is important because it:

  • increases your candidate pool of potential recruits, at a time when there’s a shortage of people who have care experience or who are thinking of a career in care
  • creates a more diverse workforce with people who share your values but who bring different lived and work experience.

How to attract candidates who share the values of your children’s home

You can attract candidates who share your values by:

  • thinking about your staff members – which ones share your values and are great at their jobs?
    • What recruitment channels did you use to recruit them?
    • How can you use different recruitment methods to attract more staff with similar values and behaviours?
  • reviewing your adverts and recruitment packs – how well do they communicate:
    • the culture and values of your organisation?
    • what it would feel like to work in your children’s homes?
  • sharing your values and your organisation’s unique culture in your adverts, social media posts, open days and any recruitment activities you plan.
  • finding ways to recruit people who share your values and who are underrepresented in your workforce
    • You could use social media, community events or jobs boards to get a wider range of people.
  • using resources – such as the WeCare Wales recruitment posts and videos – to attract staff who hadn’t previously considered a role in children’s residential care.
