Articulate

Knowing your workplace values and culture, and sharing them with new and existing staff.

Knowing your workplace values and culture, and sharing them with new and existing staff.

Articulating your values and culture enables you to describe what is the unique personality of your children’s home and what matters most to you and the children and young people who live in your homes.

This is important because it:

  • describes the unique culture of your care home to potential recruits, so you can attract staff who share your values
  • can make your workplace more inclusive, by attracting different people who share your values but may not have experience of care work
  • focuses your assessment and interview process on the values and behaviours that matter to the children and young people, and your workplace’s culture
  • contributes to the retention of great staff because they:
    • feel connected to your vision and culture
    • understand how they can make a difference by working with children and young people.

How to articulate the values and culture of your children’s home

You can articulate the values and culture of your children’s home by:

  • involving a diverse range of staff, children and young people to develop values and behaviours for your children’s home
  • if you already have organisational values and behaviours, you can think about:
    • how well they describe the culture and the behaviours you want to see from your staff members
    • whether you need to articulate them in a way that has more meaning for people.
  • describing the behaviours staff should show in their work under each of the values, so people know how to use them in their conversations, work, and relationship with children and young people
  • communicating the values and behaviours with staff and children and young people in the children’s home in simple, accessible, visual and meaningful ways
  • communicating your values externally to potential recruits using:
    • your website
    • social media
    • in adverts
    • in recruitment packs
    • your external marketing and information.
